2020 was a massive year for the Air Max 95, as the silhouette received a slew of hot new updates to celebrate its 25th anniversary in style. But if you thought Nike would be taking its foot off the gas to concentrate on other models this year, then think again!

We’re only midway through January, and already there’s been a number of leaks suggesting 2021 could be every bit as exciting for lovers of the seminal silhouette as last year. Along with the recently revealed “Coconut Milk” iteration, the Nike Air Max M272 “Recycled” has just gone on sale, and as the name suggests this one sees the brand utilising some eco-friendly materials to create a sneaker the environmentally-conscious will love.

With uppers that make use of recycled wool fabric on the tongues, side panels and eyelets, this is Nike’s latest attempt to steer itself towards a more sustainable future, and it follows on from other past styles that utilised upcycled materials such as old sawdust and rubber to magnificent effect.

Elsewhere the shoe sticks to the usual materials, with leather and suede panelling accompanied by the shoe’s signature open mesh around the tongue.

Sneakerheads have a choice of two colourways for this style. The first comes dressed in black and electric green, and it comprises of black uppers, combined with a white midsole that encases a bright green Air unit.

If that one’s a little too arresting, then the alternative is a slightly more low key affair. This one features nearly all-white uppers, save from the aforementioned recycled panels which come in grey, as well as a red stripe which runs along the shoe’s lateral and medial. This one also features a white midsole, with a matching Air unit ensuring a look that’s a little more understated than its counterpart.

With the introduction of more eco-conscious footwear, it’s obvious Nike’s taking its Move to Zero pledge seriously, and while it’s clear more needs to be done from its competitors if we’re to live in a world where our fashion choices aren’t having a detrimental impact on our planet, it’s encouraging to see the planet’s biggest sportswear manufacturer leading the charge.
