Stormzy Maya Jama split to “focus on careers”
2019 has already been a career year for Croydon-born Stormzy. Scoring his first ever UK Number One with track ‘Vossi Bop’. While just as impressively, becoming the first ever black British solo artist, and second youngest person to headline Glastonbury’s iconic Pyramid stage. Only boosting his already high stock which was further elevated in 2018 by his signing with brand Adidas. With the rapper designing his first signature shoe the Stormzy x Adidas Sobakov life seemingly couldn’t get much better for Stormzy from the outside looking in. Being flooded with praise for his Glastonbury performance by stars like Adele and Ed Sheeran as well as girlfriend of 4 years, BBC Radio One presenter Maya Jama. Well, unfortunately since then as the ‘Stormzy Maya Jama split’ title suggests, the couple have reportedly separated.
After speculation began to circulate on social media about the pair. The rumours were confirmed shortly after by Jama’s rep: “Yes, I can confirm the relationship has ended and Maya has separated from Stormzy.” The news has come as a shock to many who had only recently seen the rapper attend Maya Jama’s 25th birthday party at Night Tales bar in Hackney, London. A further statement from close to Jama said that “The decision isn’t one she has come to lightly, but ultimately the relationship has come to an end. She wants to focus on her TV and radio career for now.”
Stormzy denies cheating on Jama with Jorja Smith
The internet is a cynical place, and shortly after the news broke of the the Stormzy Maya Jama split allegations had begun to surface that Stormzy had been unfaithful. With many claiming Stormzy had cheated with singer Jorja Smith. Whom Stormzy collaborated with on her song ‘Let Me Down’ back in January 2018. Representatives for Stormzy have come out to deny these claims. “I can confirm any accusations or reports surrounding Stormzy’s infidelity to Maya are categorically not true”. Smith is yet to comment on the matter.
Since this has all unfolded Maya Jama has removed several pictures of her and Stormzy from her social media accounts, and no longer follows both him and Smith on Instagram. The Sun newspaper have claimed Maya had grown “tired of his party lifestyle.” With sources confirming she has moved out of their home in South West London.
Whats next for Stormzy?
We expect Stormzy’s rise to continue through 2019 despite this split. Having already cemented himself as one of the biggest stars in the country. While having also collaborated with friend Ed Sheeran on one of the tracks ‘Take Me Back to London’ from his latest album No.6 Collaborations Project which has received an overwhelmingly positive reception.
As well as this it looks like his other creative ventures are going from strength to strength. As previously mentioned his collaboration with Adidas Originals labelled SPRT was well received in 2018. Meaning a second capsule could be on the cards in 2019 and beyond. With Stormzy repping a Banksy designed Union Jack stab proof vest on the Glastonbury stage, with a pair of what looked like Yeezy Boost 350 v2 Black on his feet. He is setting trends and reminding Adidas that he is a huge asset going forward.
