Kanye ventures into architecture with Yeezy Home

Back in May, Kanye West tweeted that: “we’re starting a Yeezy architecture arm called Yeezy home. We’re looking for architects and industrial designers who want to make the world better”. Three months on, and an idea that was in its infancy has since started to gather pace with official images of Ye’s inaugural Yeezy Home project entitled Social Housing Project beginning to circulate.

Staying true to the project’s initial ethos outlined in his Kanye West’s May tweet, aiming to “make the world better”. This low-income housing scheme is intended to be constructed of prefabricated concrete components which hopefully will offer affordable living quarters with a similar design aesthetic to the Yeezy Studio HQ in Calabasas, California. Kanye West’s design team for the structures consists of Jalil Peraza, Petra Kustrin, Nejc Škufca and Vadik Marmeladov.

What do the houses look like?

These incredible structures that stand as 50-feet tall prefabricated domes are clearly evoking the Star Wars themed vibe that hasreportedly been the core inspiration behind the project aesthetically. Specifically the family home of Luke Skywalker depicted in Star Wars IV A New Hope. According to TMZ the building works have been ongoing for several weeks now. Situated on the 300-acre lot West purchased in Calabasas some years back.

Images have began to circulate of photo realistic renderings of concrete paneled apartments. With the slick interior images betraying the minimal-meets-sumptuous vernacular West favors. Showcasing views of a sleek, sun-lit kitchen and an atmospheric courtyard.

West’s interest in low-cost housing comes along amid languishing urgency surrounding a nation-wide housing crisis in the US. Experts widely agree that a shortage of affordable housing units nationwide is fuelling income inequality, economic stagnation, and a growing homelessness epidemic, though little has been done about it.

The designer’s efforts mirror those of another celebrity-turned-developer Elon Musk. Who has proposed making bricks from the mud excavated from his tunnel boring activities in Los Angeles, in order to build affordable housing.
